We give you the best tips straight from the experts to ensure that your lenses are not scratched, are properly cleaned without streaks and smears and last a long time.

Cleaning Glasses – the No-Gos

When dirt, fingerprints and face creams on the lenses cloud the view, many people reach for a jumper or handkerchief to clean the lenses. But instead of clear vision, the result is usually smeared or even scratched lenses.

There is a lot you can do wrong when it comes to lens care and in the end, the lens has to be completely replaced if it is not cleaned properly. To ensure that this doesn’t happen and that you can enjoy your glasses for a long time, we’ll start by looking at the no-gos when cleaning your glasses.

Cleaning Lenses – What You Should Avoid

To Keep Your Glasses For a Long Time: Expert Tips by Wetzlich

Cleaning your glasses properly can actually be quite simple. If you follow these tips, we promise you crystal-clear vision without scratches or streaks.

Effective Lens Cleaning for on the Go

It is often difficult to take proper care of glasses when you are away from home. For example, a jumper is often used as a cleaning cloth when glasses are smudged while travelling.  ‘Our clothes contain fine dust and dirt particles. If we use the jumper sleeve to clean glasses, it can scratch the lens instead of cleaning it. As a result, the lenses become cloudy over a longer period of time and vision deteriorates.’ The same applies to tissues. They pick up dirt particles from the glasses and then sand fine micro-scratches onto the glass.

Caution should also be exercised with moist spectacle cleaning cloths containing alcohol: If these are used frequently, they can also damage plastic lenses and special glass coatings. Better for on the go: fine microfibre cloths from the optician. These reliably remove grease and streaks from the lenses without damaging them. However, coarse dirt should be blown off the glasses beforehand to avoid micro-scratches. If you want to be prepared at all times, it is best to keep a fresh microfibre cloth in your pocket or glasses case.

Intensive Spectacle Care at Home & at the Optician

Plastic lenses are a huge relief for spectacle wearers in the truest sense of the word and offer even more advantages. However, plastic lenses are much softer on the surface than mineral lenses. To compensate this, all plastic lenses are given a so-called hard coating. This is usually applied in an immersion process and then cured in ovens.

So That No Question Remains Unanswered

Water that is too hot can damage the coatings of your glasses. In general, your glasses should not be exposed to excessively low or high temperatures. This damages the glasses, for example, you should not leave your glasses on the dashboard in the car at the height of summer.

A mild, non-greasy detergent is normally sufficient to clean the glasses properly. We recommend visiting an optician for ultrasonic cleaning every 3 months.

You should also clean the glasses cleaning cloths regularly, preferably at a maximum temperature of 40°C and without fabric softener.

Do not use clothing, dirty handkerchiefs, paper towels or too much pressure when cleaning. It is best to only use a clean microfibre cloth when cleaning.

Always keep your glasses in their case. Use an anti-fog lens cleaning cloth, especially in winter or when wearing a face mask. You should also wash the microfibre cloth regularly.

Once or twice a day, every 3 months professional by an optician.
